Hiiiii!
So holidays are over. I'm back studying again. Which means my procrastination has kicked in once more. Which means I'm updating this blog! So it all works out really doesn't it?
Holdays were okay. Didn't get round to going anywhere and I spent a large amount of time compiling a speadsheet of Australian Accountants contact details for work. Which was about as much fun as it sounds.
First week back at college coincided with the NZ film Festival kicking off in Wellington. Which was just brilliant timing. I did manage to get get down there to see Birdemic: Shock & Terror though which was an incredible experience. Just...the worst film ever. I can't remember the last time I've seen a film with an audience that laughed that much. It was so much fun. I understand the concept of going to see a film that you KNOW is going to be terrible is a little odd to some people. But I can't recommend it enough. I haven't laughed that hard in ages.
Also highly recommend Inception. Which is actually good for all the right reasons. So exciting to see an intelligent big budget film. Hopefully it'll do really well at the box office so that perhaps we'll see more like it, instead of the endless Transformer sequels and remakes.
Aaaand I'm done with the movie babble.
College is good, if a bit hectic. I'm just trying to finish an essay about Tarantino and postmodernism. Which is made difficult considering nobody's ever managed to succesfully define postmodernism. But hey, hopefully I'll cobble something together that they'll like!
My timetable has been wonky all week and I've ended up with 9 hours of classes on Wednesdays which is a bit rough. But it's a shorter semester than the last one. Reckon I can hang in there. Advertising looks like it might be a really fun class. We're doing portraiture in photography which is scaring me because it's really not my thing. I don't like dealing with people. However I'm aware that if I can gain the skillssss to make people look good in a picture, that's never going to be a useless skill. People will always want to look good in photos and they'll pay good money for it. So it definitely seems like something I should learn about. I'm keen and enthusiastic about it but also a bit terrified.
Other than that I've just been trying to stay warm! Cats vomiting on the bed in the middle of the night haven't really helped. We're almost into August now which is really the last month of proper winter for us. So there's light at the end of the tunnel. September definitely has a spring type feel to it. Once we get there, I think I'll feel better. I hate coming home in the dark at 5pm.
I still haven't booked my tickets home yet but I will! Just figuring things out. It looks like I'll definitely be done with classes by the last week of November so I should be sweet. I'm thinking of trying to fly out around Nov 29/30th but we'll see. It depends what works out cheaper. You should probably start scrubbing the red carpet now though so you're properly prepared.
I also found some perfect accessories for my luggage:

They're just stickers you stick on the side of your suitcase. Nifty eh? I wonder if customs would see it the same way..

Hi all!
Yes, I know, I've been apalling. Very sorry.
It's been a crazy few weeks. I am now officially done with Semester 1. I had my assesment meeting on Wednesday and on the whole, I seem to be on track with everything. I did screw up my last Design assignment which is bumming me out because it's the only thing I failed. It turned okay though. Because my previous Design marks were good, I don't have to actually resumbit it. So I'm all good to go through to Semester 2. I'm resubmitting the stupid thing anyway though because it's become a sore point now!
Also have a 1500 word essay on postmodernism to do over the holidays for my Contextual Studies class. Exxxxcellent. Because we wouldn't want to ...y'know, relax or anything.
So yes, it's been a trying few weeks really. Lots of late nights and cursing and declarations about how terrible I am at everything I touch. Matt's been really great about not throttling me.
My birthday was good! Went out for nommy dinner. and Matt bought 27+ presents (it came out to be over 30 in the end) because he's insane.

BEHOLD MY AMAZING MONSTER SLIPPERS AND RED SNUGGIE.
Since then it's been pretty much work, work, work. I'm now off for two weeks. I'm still busy compiling spreadsheets of Australian Accountants for actual work though (as opposed to course work) so that's been a lot of fun (that was my sarcastic voice).
Matt's grandma sadly died on Wednesday so Penny and Ron both left for the South Island this morning. This is the first time they've both been away, together at the same time since 1982 (NOT KIDDING.) So basically they haven't been away together anywhere during my lifetime. Cannot quite get my head around that.
Anyway, they've gone down there to sort things out. So we are TREV SITTING this weekend! Ohmygosh, so excited. I get to give him his wheelbarrow full of food! Apparently at the house, we've been left a double A4 sheet of paper with instructions on looking after him. I haven't seen it yet but I am quite excited.
We're spending the evenings round there so that he doesn't get upset because he's "not used to being on his own".
Cat people are way more ridiculous than dog people.
Anyway, that'll be fun.
We're contemplating trying to get away for a weekend before classes start again. Not sure where yet. Maybe just up to Rotorua. The weather's so cold that it actually becomes a little dangerous driving around the mountains and stuff. As fun as it would be to get snowed in somewhere (and you know I'd be stoked with that!) I think getting stuck in a car overnight would get old pretty fast. So we'll see.
Classes start up again in mid July. I've picked my 4 elective papers for second semester. They are Photography, Digital Imaging (which is required if you pick photography), Web Design..and then I had to pick one other from the list so I went with Advertising just because I thought it'd be interesting. I would have liked to have done drawing & illustration but I don't I'm strong enough really. I was excited to have passed drawing in the first semester though. I learnt a lot. On top of those I have to do papers in Digital Media, Design and Contextual Studies as well. So..y'know..not slacking!
This coming term goes through to mid September, when I'll get another 2 week break. Then after that we go through to mid November. And then I'm done and getting on a plane! So I have a feeling the next 5 months are going to go rather quickly. I hope so 'cos I'm very excited about coming home and having a Northern Hemisphere Christmas. I start singing Christmas carols just thinking about it. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Hope everybody's happy and well. And a big thank you to everyone that sent me birthday cards and presents. I know it's a pain in the neck mailing stuff out here so I really appreciate it. You make a girl feel loved.
Take it easy everyone! If we get mini-roadtripping, then I'll make sure I write a decent entry about it here. I'm aware I owe you one!

[30 Apr 2010|09:48pm] |
Wellll. That was a long week.
Second photography assignment handed in today. Third Digital Media Assignment handed in on Tuesday (complete with completely awkward presentation!). Midway through a gigantic Design Project which is due next Friday. New Assignment handed out on Tuesday (Designing a booklet about fonts and typefaces! OooOooo!) And my boss chose this week to give me 100+ circuit boards to load code onto, test and courier to Auckland.
I've found myself waking up in the middle of the night with my heart pounding. Apparently I don't handle stress very well!
I think I've probably got it all under control though. This weekend, hopefully I'll be able to get some work done and also calm down a bit.
Last weekend I went down to Pukerua Bay for Holly's birthday. That was great. It's nice to get out of Palmy for a bit.
Holly's birthday celebration's went off without a hitch! Complete with doggies, carrot cake and glow golfing.

Holly won at glow golfing. She's going to be the next Tiger Woods (minus the marital issues)

A little bit of birthday strangulation never hurt anybody!

I also attended my first Anzac day parade because Holly was marching in it. She did really well. Far better than I did at photographing it. Apparently I'm incapable of photographing moving objects. I'm sure that won't be a problem with my chosen career *cough*.

It was FREEZING cold so she did so well to stand still for so long.

Isn't she the prettiest Holly you've ever seen?
So I got back here Sunday afternoon. And it's been crazy ever since really.
I decided to kick off my weekend of intensive studying by going to see Iron Man 2 (seemed like a good idea at the time!) but it was packed out. So Robert Downey Jnr is going to have to wait for me. We had a nice dinner out though and I'm feeling a little more relaxed now. I think I need to drink more alcohol. I suspect that's what my problem is.
Anyway, love you all lots and lots and loooooads. Hope everybody's well and dad hasn't been eaten by any bears in Canada.
And Holly (if you're reading this, which you probably are because you're a sneaky blog reader!) I'll send you a disc with all your birthday photos on. I have a lot of you lot jumping around modelling and generally being insane. Thanks for inviting me to your party and for the first time EVER not putting the evil Wendy doll in my bed. I am thankful for that. I can't handle the nightmares!

I PASSED MY FIRST 3 ASSIGNMENTS (1 photography and 2 Digital Media assignments)! HOOOOOORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!
B+ for my first photography assignment. Which I'm pretty happy with! I was worried I didn't include enough written material and it would drag me down. That didn't seem to happen though. B+ seems like a pretty good place to start! Handing in my next one next week. SO much work to do it's not even funny.
But hey, I haven't failed yet! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Alroight!
Still working hard. Just about finished with the Easter holidays. Which I've spent working and studying so really weren't holidays at all. Bleehhhhhh.
Matt's shooting the second half of his short film this weekend. It's actually underway right now. I just got back from taking them all fish & chips. I think I'm the Catering department!
Anyway, he's stressed out but he's loving it. And the film is looking really good.

(They even have a dolly!)

You might recognise the t-shirt, dad! Actually I think mum gave him the orange t-shirt as well. Both my parents are clothing my boyfriend. That's odd isn't it?
Anyway. That's that. I am freezing cold and grumpy and slightly stressed out. But hopefully I'll snap out of it soon. I'm hoping to get some assignments back next week so I'll know where I stand with things. At the moment I'm kind of stumbling around in the dark, hoping that I'm giving them what they want. It's making me a bit unsure of myself. But we'll see how things go. Next term is 9 weeks long. Then that'll be the end of semester 1 and I'll start new papers for the second half of the year (excluding Contextual Studies and Digital Media which run right through) so I'm hoping in the second semester I can focus more on photography. It's actually hard work coming up with new ideas for things all the time. This course is light on the learning-out-of-textbooks stuff but heavy on the COME UP WITH A DESIGN FOR THIS.. stuff. Which in a way is harder and a little more stressful for me 'cos you can't always have ideas on command and when I'm having a brain-freeze day (which is fairly often!), I start to panic.
Anyway. Next weekend I'm off to Pukerua Bay for the annual Holly Abbott Holmes birthday festivites. So that'll be a twilighting good time. I haven't been down there in ages so it'll be lovely to see everyone and those lovely doggies.
I'm now just sitting here trying to tell myself that the scrabbling noise I can hear in the roof above me is just my imagination. It's getting harder though considering the cat's staring at the ceiling, also. We can't both be imagining it. Oh dear.
I'm not going up there.
Big happy birthday to mum for Friday. Hope you had a lovely day!!

Hi! Will update soon. Very busy and crazy at the moment.
Just thought I'd let you know I'm working hard:

|
|
|
[28 Feb 2010|11:22am] |
Alright. Quicky update! (EDIT - I always say "quicky update" and then I ramble on way longer than I meant to)
1. I have not murdered my neighbour with a toaster (despite threats on Facebook that I might due to his inability to operate a chainsaw at an appropriate hour!). He has cut it out. For the time being. The toaster threat will always be hanging over him though and I think he knows that now. Probably.
2. I start college tomorrow. Which I'm kind of peeing my pants about so I'm trying not to think about it too hard. It sort of makes me want to go rock myself in the corner a bit. But I'm sure it'll be fine. Just a bit scary throwing myself back into the whole education thing. Tomorrow is a sort of introduction day and we'll get our timetables and stuff. So I think I'll feel better after that. I just want to know what my weeks are going to look like and how I'm going to structure working at the office around it. Right now it's all a bit unknown and I don't like it!
Also, some genius thought a "Get to know each other BBQ lunch" was a good idea. I really actually think that sounds horrendous. But I am an unsociable cow so I suppose I'm probably going to be alone on that one. I will go and I will smile and I will plan out my very best "hi, my name is Cathy and I am an alcoholic like movies" speech.
I really am excited about it all! Just also equally terrified. We'll see anyway. I'll update again after the first week and let you know how it goes. Matt thinks I'm going to become a hipster wanker student and start drinking latte's. *fingers crossed!* I do get a student discount at a bunch of place across town, so that'll be helpful.
Yesterday I decided I wanted to get out of town for a bit so we drove up the coast to the surf highway.
Stopped off in a little village called Hawera which is almost always deserted. It's a weird little place. There's nothing much there and it almost faintly feels like some sort of zombie apocalypse has taken place. There's never anybody around. We stopped there when the french girls were over too and it hasn't changed much. There had apparently been some sort of American Car show going on which had clearly rocked the entire town because there were American flags flying everywhere. Way to make your creepy town, even creepier guys!

We got some lunch and then I decided I wanted to hit that "BEST & LESS" store because last time Cecile and I both got amazing pirate belts from there.
This time I got sidetracked by the "Hawera Forever" t-shirts. I really wanted one but they were 15 bucks and I thought I should stop spending my money on weird stuff.

(shortly after this very wise decision, I made Matt buy me this cowboy hat...)

I really did need it though. At least now I have a cowboy hat in both the Southern and the Northern hemisphere. My cowboy hat needs are completely covered, worldwide.
So we drove on and stopped at Opunake Beach. Which really failed to have decent surf so we ended up sitting on the beach, reading magazines and getting sunburnt. So that was fun. Matt was pretty annoying though so I built a sandcastle on his feet. 'cos that's just how I roll.

Let this be a warning.
Everywhere we go, cats seem to follow now. It's like I'm giving off a "crazy cat lady" magnetic pull to every feline in the surrounding area. This cat could have sat underneath any number of cars parked up by the beach.

In related news, my feet are still that huge.
So after that, we decided to drive back, which took ages but we were in home in time to feed the gang without anybody getting upset. Then Matt spent the evening watching the rugby and swooning over the Swiss Curling Team. Sky Sports was such a terrible idea.
So that's pretty much that.
Oh and in case you didn't notice. I have short red hair now. It looks a bit like this:

I don't really like it. The colour's good but I hate having short hair. I really didn't want it this short.. I can't have long hair either though, because it gets all stringy and disgusting. So basically I'm cursed to hate my hair forever. As curses go, it's probably not the WORST one there is but it's still pretty rubbish.
And on that cheery note, I shall say goodbye. Love you all lots! We've got a tsunami warning here today so if I'm not washed away on a tidal wave, then I'll update again next weekend. Last time there was a tsunami warning, the terrifying tidal wave turned out to be about 20cm big. So we're not busting out the rubber rings just yet.
Seeyaaa!

Alroight?
Not much in the way of news but thought I'd upload a whole load of photos I've taken recently. Summer is most definitely here. It's hot and sunny and fairly uncomfortable to work in but hey. Can't really complain. Well alright, I'm complaining quite a bit. It's a very stuffy office! But anyway. Outside of the office, it's great!

( Clickity click click click )
Sorry I don't have many pictures of me. I know that must be heartbreaking for you all. I'll try and do better.
We finally got our Sky TV fitted yesterday. I don't think I've ever seen Matt this excited. EVER. Football on TV just doesn't happen in this country so it's all a bit new to him to have MORE THAN ONE football match going on at the same time. I've caught him a couple of times checking the TV listings while we're still at work.
My current goals are to get sorted with college (which starts beginning of March) and get my hair cut. These seem like fairly attainable goals so I think I'm doing alright. Aside from the odd hayfever invasion, I've managed to avoid getting sick again. So all in all, I think we're doing well!
Love you all lots and lots and lots! Hope you're all coping with the snow alright. I've been hideously jealous. The worst snow in 30 years and I wasn't there to see it! Ahhhhhhhh! If you could arrange some for next Christmas when I'm back, that'd be fab.
Talk to you all soon!

Hi guys!
I know I owe you a big ol' update. There's really not a lot happening at the moment though so I'm struggling to think of interesting things to write. Having said that, I know that when I'm following somebody's blog and they don't update for ages, I get pretty annoyed. So hopefully this will put off any annoyed feelings you might be having towards me!
Matt's gearing up to shoot his long/short film (it's longer than normal but not feature length - probably be about half an hour). It's called Overtime, it has a time machine and it's pretty complicated. Because it's longer than his last one, it's taking a lot of work and preparation. Part of preparing to shoot something is the process of storyboarding. Generally this involves an artist doing a rough sketch of each shot to get an idea of positioning of actors and camera angles and stuff. Matt decided to save time and use photographs instead. Both lead actors live in Wellington so he and I stood in for them for the storyboards.
Thought you might be keen to see some of 'em. It was nice to stretch my acting muscles. I really could be the next Meryl Streep.
( Click for storyboards )
Also while, I'm here. We went to Foxton beach the other evening, since summer appears to have arrived (it's 10.30pm at night here and still over 20 degrees). It was actually bloody freezing at Foxton but we did share our chips with the seagulls and it made for some pretty spectacular photo opportunities. I thought they came out pretty awesome:
( Squalk! )
Apparently the secret to great bird photography is having some chips on you.

NANA NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!
BIG BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL OUR CHRISTMAS PRESENTS!
Honestly, everybody went way above and beyond and we feel extremely spoilt. Thank you so much!
I will update with pictures from Christmas Day when our internet's a bit more co-operative. I don't know what's going on tonight but it took me half an hour just to upload that one photo.
We had a lovely day though! Really great. It all went by too quickly. But I'm looking forward to having a good summer now. Hoping the weather's going to sort itself out so we can have our now traditional New Years Day on the beach!
Will update soon when the internet's not crawling along. Love you all lots and lots and lots! Thanks again!!

Just been tootling around youtube and found all the Jim Reeves christmas songs I can handle. Every time I hear these songs I'm whizzed back to being 8 years old and skipping around the living room at home Cottage, hanging paper chains.
WE LOVE YOU JIM!

Alright!
Christmas decorations are hung. Pretty much. Actually they WERE hung, then they started falling down. But for a while things looked pretty:

Today has been spent mainly trying to get a Christmas hat on Trev's head.

I'm afraid that's the best we could do. He really wasn't embracing the festive spirit.
I have been doing my very best to compensate. I made some not disgusting Christmas biscuits (okay so I burnt a good third of them but the other two thirds were very nice thankyouverymuch)

And this afternoon I've been trying my hand at a Christmas Cake. I know. I shouldn't have gone down this road. It's far too technical for a burns-cheese-on-toast kinda girl like me but mum encouraged me this morning and I thought WHY NOT!
This is what it looked like before it went in the oven:

Doesn't look ENTIRELY unChristmascake like does it? I don't know. It's still in the oven so I guess we'll see. Either way, even if it's gross it's always more fun decorating Christmas Cakes than actually eating them. So it's a win-win for me really.
What else? What else?
Palmy Christmass parade was attended last week. TANK was spotted but no tinsel this year.

I think that's ruined Christmas really.
We finally got paaaaaid! So that was a bit of a relief. Although we're due to get paid again on Tuesday and I highly doubt we'll see any money so it all kind of ends up the same. But hey, thinking positive.
Other than that, I think we're just hanging on waiting for holidays now. The weather's been totally weird. We had some proper summer sunshine this past week. Even reached a magical 23 degrees! But now we're back to 16 degrees and raining again. Which looks to continue through the week. But two days of summer was a nice surprise!
Aaaaand okay I'm all out of news. And I have to go check on my Christmas Cake. So I'll leave it there. Hope you're all good and happy and filled with festive cheer!

Halloooooooooooo!
Just realised I've had a warning from Paul so I better get with the updateage or I'll be in trouble. So hi! I haven't updated this since uhhh..October 16th. EEk! That is quite a while init? I do apologise. In fact...

I'll walk around with this on my face all week. Probably. Maybe more like an hour. It keeps falling off. The sticky tape's not very sticky. But you get the idea. I'm sorry.
So what have I been up to?
Weeeeell, Halloween I guess was the next thing that happened after we last "spoke". Matt's in the final stages of editing his short film The Top Job about guy who goes for a job interview for the position of god. I've seen a rough cut and it's looking good! They got a fancy pants camera this time and it looks really pro. And his actors are getting better and better with each project.
So Halloween we went down to Wellington so he could do some editing with the guys there. I occupied myself with Christmas shopping which was a ginormous waste of time because I can't afford anything at all. I did find some Blackpool Rock on sale though. That was pretty bizarre. It even had a little picture of Blackpool on it. Who comes to New Zealand and buys Blackpool Rock? I don't know.
Anyway, I met back up with him for dinner and then in the evening we met up with Bailey and Kylie (fellow editor/producers) and went to a special preview screening of this:

Absolutely packed out theater. Can't beat a theater full of horror film lovers on Halloween. It was great. And the film scared the ABSOLUTE crap out of me. I'd heard it wasn't very good so didn't really expect too much from it. And I reckon if you watched it with a crowd of people on DVD all taking the piss, it probably wouldn't be very scary at all. But it really did a number on me. I guess it tapped into something. Plenty of shrieking in the theater so I don't think I was the only one. I thought I was a tough, hardened horror fan but apparently I'm an enormous wuss. Can't wait to see it again. We got back to Palmy about 2am, went straight to bed and 5 minutes later there was a bang on the wall. No kidding. I sat bolt upright "RIGHT, I CAN'T SLEEP BECAUSE OF THAT STUPID MOVIE!" So we sat up watching The Italien Job until I eventually fell asleep. Seriously though, I don't know what's going on. Can't remember the last time I got that silly over a film.
Soooo that was Halloween. Bonfire night we didn't really do anything because New Zealand is lame. I did have a dance around with some sparklers though.

And our particularly lame pumpkins:

Lots of Christmas Shopping followed that. I've now sent everything off so you're either going to get parcels in the next week or they'll arrive on Christmas Eve. Never quite know what Economy Post's going to do. I'm all done with that stuff though so that's a bit of relief!
Today is December 1st and I do NOT have an Advent Calendar. I'm sure you'll all agree, this is a shocking turn of events. I intend to rectify the situation tommorow. There's a Hannah Montanna Advent Calendar out there with my name on it!
Work is pretty awful at the moment because we're barely getting paid. There's no money coming in until the new year so everybody's struggling. Don't quite know what's going to happen there. Think it's going to be a fairly cheapie Christmas this year! But I've definitely decided this coming weekend will be Decorations weekend in which we put up our tree and decorations and try to work out if the Christmas lights (which have been hanging off the gutters all year) still work. Fun times. Also it's Palmerston North Christmas Parade on Saturday which is always hilariously shit and totally puts me in the festive mood. So we're looking on the bright side! It helps that the weather's getting warmer too. I definitely feel happier when the sun's shining.
I think that's about it for now! I'll write another update at the weekend when our Christmas stuff's up. I've seen a little battery controlled train that I want to go round and round the bottom of the Christmas Tree. I reckon if I plead with Matt between now and Saturday, he'll totally come round to the idea.
Love you all lotttts! Hope you're all well!

Check me out being a badass (with the help of photoshop...)
Aaand that's a silly string gun. But you get the idea! We're just been checking out locations and Matt's been practicing his filming/editing skilllzzz so I stepped in as actor for an afternoon. I am terrible. But I can look suitably pissed off as an assasin.

JUMPING SHOT!

Fun, fun, fun
Matt has a rehearsal thing this weekend so I'll have Sunday all to myself. Will try and talk to you all! Hope everyone's happy and healthy!

Just wanted to say GOOD LUCK to mum with the big move tomorrow! Also, now that you're back in the land of the internet, I have all your email details if you've forgotten them.
To everyone else - we're off adventuring tommorow so I'll be MIA this weekend. And probably next weekend if I go to Dinie's. But will call if I can.
Love you all!

Alrighty, I have a zillion and one photos to post so this could end up kind of huge. Apologies for those on Facebook - you've probably already seen most of these!
Spring has most definitely spruuung. We're surrounded by daffodils and blossom and baby lambs. And the weather has calmed down a bit which is lovely. Especially as we're trying to walk to work and back every day. I've only been caught in the rain once.
A few weeks back we went for a walk to Lake Papaitonga near Levin (see last entry for what happened there!). Here's the rest of the pictures from that little walk:
